Item:
Safe-Lock breathing system - ducted spill valve

Date of manufacture:
80s

Manufacturer:
Penlon

Description:
The Penlon Safe-Lock system was extremely ingenious. Manufactured from conductive plastics, the 22 mm B.S. male tapers could be attached directly to corrugated antistatic rubber hose. The threaded slip rings could then be screwed over the hose to produce a reliable locking action. Alternatively, the taper could be mated to a Safe-lock female connector to which it could then be locked again using the slip ring. The slip ring itself was secured by means of an O-ring that doubled as a gas-tight seal. This particular component incorporates a conventional Heidbrink-type spill valve (lightly spring-loaded unidirectional valve with variable orifice adjustment). The exhaust port has a 30 mm compliant taper. This taper can be sawn off (in countries where compliance is less rigidly observed) when the residual moulded flange will secure a corrugated hose. The whole assembly is lightweight, shatterproof and repeatedly sterilisable by ethylene oxide or autoclave.
