Item:
Cardiff Oxygen failure Warning. Hillard Rosen Bag Isolator

Date of manufacture:
1970s

Manufacturer:
BOC

Description:
This device isolates the bag mount (bottom in picture) in the event of an oxygen failure. This prevents the patient from simply rebreathing to and from the bag during an oxygen failure. The green PVC tube is connected to the anaesthetic machine's 4 bar gas distribution system via one of the mini-schrader outlets. If the oxygen pressure falls below 4 bar, the bag is isolated. In conjunction with a whistle incorporated into the scavenging reservoir, the patient's own inspiratory efforts will cause a whistle to sound. The device replaces the Cardiff Swivel patient gas outlet on BOC Boyle M Anaesthetic Machines. It was designed by Professor M Rosen and Mr E K Hillard, Chief Technician in the Cardiff Department of Anaesthetics and fitted to all Boyle M machines in the new University Hospital of Wales. The horizontal axis 22 mm outlet connects to the breathing system while the vertical 22 mm outlet connects to the 2 litre reservoir bag.
